as listening. For a moment, they were the only couple on the floor, the only couple dancing. But soon
other people began to dance, moving to the music. Slim and Nadine outdanced them all. Even the
band watched them with some admiration. They had their own steps, their own style but somehow,
together, they made a perfect couple.
The song ended and they barely had time to walk over to their table for a quick drink before the
music began again. Slim danced, but he watched Nadine dance even more closely. She closed her
eyes, swayed and swirled and turned, dancing circles around him. He watched her breasts bounce and
bob under the thin blouse, and saw, with great satisfaction, that other men, handsomer, more nicely
dressed than he, thinner, watched her dance also. He felt they must envy him, and he loved the feeling.
The next one was a slow song and he and Nadine pressed closely together. He tightened his hips
against her, though his pubic bone hurt from their earlier lovemaking, trying to convey his love and
desire through his movement. The curve and softness of her nestled against him and made him feel
better than he'd ever felt. She held him tighter and pushed against him, excited by the effect she was
clearly having on him, his desire for her. Slim ground against her, his erection almost painful in its
intensity, fired by the memory of their afternoon. Nadine, smiling, lifted up on her toes and rubbed
against him feverishly, maliciously. Then she touched him softly on the back, low on his spine, and he
exploded in orgasm, knees buckling and arms squeezing her tightly. All he could hear was her
delighted laughter.
Nadine wouldn't let him stop dancing, even though he was sure his face was red through it all.
For forty-five more minutes they danced, Nadine breaking out in giggle fits now and then, sometimes
so severely she had to stop dancing to laugh. Slim thought he should be angry or embarrassed, but
somehow it made him love her more that she should be so amused by getting him off the way she had.
It made him feel almost young and foolish again.
Then, the music was stilled, the beers were drunk and they were sitting in the van. Nadine was
still giggling.
"Oh, Slim," she said, "you should have seen your face. You were so surprised."
"Jeez, Nadine. Is sex always so public around here, along with talking about my personal life?"
"I'm afraid so," she said. "Most folks around here, well, we just don't care. It's not everywhere.
There are places you can and places you can't. I generally try not to go to the places you can't."
"But you said you didn't that there weren't any other men."
"There aren't," she said. "That was true. But I like the people and the attitudes better where you
can have that kind of freedom." She laughed again. "Listen, Slim, the only reason I didn't just reach
down your pants and grab you is because I didn't think you could handle it. Didn't you see the other

people on the dance floor or at the tables?"
He shook his head and smiled. "No, I only saw you."
"That's sweet," Nadine said. "I know this isn't your world, okay? But for a lot of us, sex is out in
the open. No one cares. It's not loose. I mean people don't just do it with anyone. But when people are
in love and joyful with each other, we just let it go. It makes us feel good, you understand?"
"No," Slim said, "not really. You mean I don't know what you mean."
"It's like I said. There are some clubs around town where folks are free to do what they want as
long as nobody gets hurt. If you wanted to drink one beer too many, someone would have stopped
you. Or if you'd tried to start a fight, you'd soon have been surrounded by people determined not to let
you. But if you and I want to discreetly fool around on the floor, no one cares as long as we're not in
the way."
"I see," he said. "You know something? I honestly do like this world. It's strange, but it's strange
my way. Is it all free like that?"
"I don't know," Nadine said. "I don't know what's different about your world to what it is here.
From everything you've told me, though, your world isn't a very happy place."
"No, it's not. It's not at all."
"Tell me a little about it," she said. "What your world's like."
Slim sighed. Where did he even begin to describe his world? "It's dirty," he said. "The air, the [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
